Today we welcomed Kyle Woolsey, Vice President of Strategy and M&A, Waste-Away Group, Ltd.

Waste-Away Group - Who are We?

Waste-Away Group, Ltd. manages waste collection, transportation, and disposal, both to a Materials Recovery Facility and landfill facilities for residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Having served Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan for over 70 years, Waste-Away Group, Ltd. is headquartered in Elkhart, Indiana. Its affiliate companies, Borden Waste-Away Service, Inc., providing residential waste and recycling removal, Himco Waste-Away Service, Inc., serving our commercial and industrial customers for their waste and recycling removal, Integra Certified Document Destruction LLC, providing safe, secure destruction of sensitive material and hard drives, and Recycling Works, Inc., the Materials Recovery Facility that sorts and ships recycling commodities to the world market for reuse. Together, these companies making up Waste-Away Group, provide innovative, environmentally sound solutions while maintaining a leading market share in its core business areas.

Kyle gave a great overview of the vast services managed and available to the public including waste collection, state of the art recycling, and secure document destruction.

There were a lot of questions related to recycling at the end.... perusing their website, one blog article jumped out to provide perspective about a frequently asked question: Is My Beer Bottle Recyclable With a Lime In It?

“People have been making glass for more than 4000 years, and it’s one of the few materials in the world that is perpetually recyclable. The same glass can be broken down and reused over and over again — theoretically, a million times over.

Since recycled glass melts at a lower temperature than new materials, it takes less energy to reuse. In fact, much of the glass in your favorite bottle of beer has possibly been in tens, if not hundreds of bottles of beer before.”

The glass from recycling facilities “goes through a mechanical crushing system that breaks it into tiny pieces called cullet. From there, the cullet passes through a series of magnets, screens and vacuums to remove any remaining metal, plastic, bits of labels, etc”….even lime wedges.

Although it is ideal for recycling centers to have clean, empty materials to sort and bale, some contaminants can be handled fairly easily while still rendering the recycling load as viable.
